TikTok divided over 'potato-like' Scots author married to 'insanely hot' man
Hazel McBride jumped on a TikTok trend about 'average-looking' women being in relationships with stunning men.
by Ewan Mowat, John Jones, https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/authors/ewan-mowat/ · Daily RecordWhen people reveal they are in a relationship, others often speculate as to whether the couple are a match, both on a personal and a physical level. There has long been online and offline discourse about which person is 'punching' and which is 'settling'.
While it is surely never helpful for the relationship, it seems that people just cannot help themselves. And one couple who felt like they might fit the bill for an imbalanced relationship left the internet divided after posting a now-viral video.
Scottish author Hazel McBride and her husband took part in a TikTok trend in 2022, which showed off straight couples along with a voiceover which said: "Yeah, but when are we gonna see insanely hot men with average-looking women?"
Hazel, who joked that she "looks like a potato" poses next to her hubby, who shows off his chiselled jawline and dimples as he cheekily grins at the camera, Wales Online reports.
But despite being self-deprecating about her appearance, Hazel revealed that she does not feel insecure about being paired up with her handsome husband.
And the clip, which racked up over seven million views and one million likes, provoked a variety of responses - though most were supportive of Hazel in one way or another.
Many accepted that her model-like man was gorgeous - but that she was more than a match for him. One person commented: "I am confused sis. Don't put yourself down like that".
Another wrote: "He's hot, so are you," while a third added: "You're way more than just average". Someone else replied: "As someone attracted to most human forms I can tell you that you are not an average looking woman. That smile?! Those eyes??! That clear skin?"
Others questioned whether her husband was really "insanely hot", though plenty disagreed. One person replied: He's hot as hell! Thanks for giving hope to us average girls. Nothing wrong with average either, most of us are average."

More users highlighted that good looks aren't all that's needed in a relationship. One said: "Guys, it's fine. He obviously does look better. So what, that's not what keeps relationships together." Another said: "We see a happy couple together and that's what matters" - to which Hazel replied: "100%".
The author, who regularly posts videos about her books and her relationship to her 57,000 followers, appeared to take all the comments in her stride.
And she even suggested that her hubby was the lucky one. Replying to one user who said that he cared more about inner beauty than looks, Hazel said that her relationship balances out as her husband's "personality is average and [hers] is banging".
