‘Shrinking’ Season 2 Trailer: Brett Goldstein Joins Jason Segel and Harrison Ford for More Therapy and Shenanigans
Goldstein serves as co-creator and executive producer on the Apple TV+ series alongside Segel and Bill Lawrence, but is now joining the cast.
by Harrison Richlin · IndieWireNeed a good cry? Maybe a hearty laugh? “Shrinking” has you covered. After debuting last year to warm reviews and awards consideration for stars Jason Segel and Jessica Williams at the 75th Primetime Emmys, the mental health dramedy co-created by Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein is returning October 16 for another season on Apple TV+, this time with Goldstein joining the cast.
The first trailer for “Shrinking” Season 2 has just dropped, and the new season picks up with the story of cognitive behavioral therapist Jimmy Laird (Segel) as he faces the grief of losing his wife and reevaluates his approach to his patients, as well his teenage daughter (Lukita Maxwell). Not unlike the other Apple TV+ hit “Ted Lasso,” “Shrinking” is funny, deep, and heartfelt.
The series also co-stars Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams. Goldstein and Damon Wayans, Jr. join the cast as guest stars this season, both in undisclosed roles, while supporting players Michael Urie, Luke Tennie, Christa Miller, and Ted McGinley also return.
Continuing a narrative line from last season, Wendy Malick reprises her role as romantic interest to Ford’s Dr. Paul Rhoades as he continues to deal with his Parkinson’s diagnosis and what it will mean for the future of his practice. Other resurfacing plot points include Jimmy’s possible romance with fellow therapist Gaby (Williams), as well as the fallout from one of his patients (Heidi Gardner) pushing her husband off a cliff at what she thought was her doctor’s suggestion.
In addition to Segel and Williams each receiving Emmy nominations, Segel was also nominated a Golden Globe Award for his work.
In IndieWire’s review of the first season, Ben Travers was a bit mixed on the show, writing, “Apple’s overzealous ‘Ted Lasso’ successor hocks the same brand of quirky kindness outshining a dark reality. Instead of a football coach applying his believe system in a new sport, we get a grieving therapist mapping his own issues onto patients in pain.”
Hopefully Season 2 wins him over. Watch the trailer for the new season below:
Season 2 of “Shrinking” streams on Apple TV+ October 16, with new episodes dropping each subsequent Wednesday.
