Boulevard's adult panto is X-rated excellence as fabulously filthy cast banish the January blues

Newcastle cabaret haunt Boulevard is currently playing host to its adult pantomime Robin Hood Rubbin' Wood

If you've noticed the air turning a shade of blue down on Churchill Street, do not be alarmed, it's not Storm Isha kicking off, but the work of the Boulevard adulty pantomime cast, who are in the middle of a month long run of their fabulously filthy production.

Now in its seventh year, the Boulevard adult panto has become a staple of many Geordies' January and rightly so. While siting on the sofa of a Saturday evening and trying to work out who the singing Air Fryer is, is a decent enough wat to pass the time, there is much more fun to be had at the Newcastle city centre cabaret haunt, especially when its stars don't even have to wait until the 9pm watershed to be a bit fruity with their language.

Following in the footsteps of past pantos like Snow White: Rotten to the Core and Jack Off The Beanstalk, Robin Hood Rubbin' Wood certainly isn't for the sheltered, refined or easily shocked folk of Tyneside, and fortunately, there weren't many of them about on Saturday, as well oiled flock of revellers drank in every last mucky morsel of a two hour titillating tale.

Sadly, as a somewhat reluctant Dry January crusader, I had to painfully flick past the wines and spirits to the Mocktail list for my tipple of choice for the occasion but even stone cold sober, I found the whole thing to be totally hilarious. Absolutely no Dutch courage is required to enjoy what is one of the best adult pantos at Boulevard to date.

Arriving a year after the saucy and stellar Snow White retelling, the raunchy take on Robin Hood had a very tough act to follow but, with the same cast in tow, it fired on every frisky cylinder. It's not every weekend you witness a duel involving sex toys as swords but you know what? Any other weapon of choice would have felt wrong!

Fresh from their five star rated run in Sunderland Empire's much more family friendly festive panto Beauty & the Beast, Miss Rory and Tom Whalley are once again in smashing form as Fairy Gliterous and Silly Wllly, with their character names just the tip of the iceberg when it came to some of the filth that comes out of their mouths throughout - all in the best possible taste of course!

With Miss Rory the wand waving gift that keeps on giving, as the sequined super glue that holds the whole thing together and Tom, whose mad cap and expletive filled script that once again that makes you realise there true are no barriers to where his mind can wander, they were a terrific double act and just two of a fantastic cast.

Having threatened to steal the show 12 months ago as Phil in Snow White, Luke David Martin is once again an absolute comedic gem as the Friar, with his mannerisms and stage presence compellingly crude. Luke recently starred as an ugly sister in the Whitley Bay panto and his on stage sibling Dan Mawston, proved that, as the songs goes, there truly is nothing like a dame, particularly when there's one at your disposal like the glamorous yet gauche Patsy, who led act two opener Oom Pah Pah like Nancy in Oliver...if Kat Slater from EastEnders had been playing her.

As Robin, Jacob Anderton is a tight wearing tour de force of a panto hero, serving up the charm, the charisma and the comic timing the very un-Disney title role demanded, while in Hazel Pude as Maid Marion, you have an all singing, all dancing pantomime princess who is every inch NOT a damsel in distress and all the better for it.

The cast of Boulevard adult pantomime Robin Hood Rubbin' Wood

Even an adult pantomime needs a baddy...enter Stephen Sullivan as the Sheriff, who garners boos in abundance, thanks to his vitriolic and villainous star turn, which is both cutthroat but marvellously camp as the South Shields actor proved once again why his name needs to go straight on the cast list.

The biggest thing in Boulevard adult panto's impressive arsenal of weapons is that fact that it isn't smutty or rude for the sake of being so. Swear words aren't just thrown into the air to get a reaction an the innuendo pudding is never over-egged This is very much a pantomime for adults, rather than an adult panto in the most literal of terms.

All the elements you'd expect from a more traditional panto, like colourful backdrops and audience shouts outs are present and correct, they've just been dragged into a more X-rated, less suitable for kids realm - which is a fantastic place to spend a bleak January evening!

The fact the same cast return year after year to take part in the Boulevard adult panto suggest that they are having just as much of a ball on stage as their audiences are having in front of them. and revel in the chance to be able to leave their Ps and Qs firmly at the door, let alone mind them.

Snow White: Rotten to the Core set the bar very high last year and it's very easy to see why in excess of 3,000 tickets have been sold this time round. Give your inhibitions a night off and get amongst the debauchery!

Oh and look out for the cameo from HRH King Charles.
