Sex Education star scores major BBC new role in comedy show

One of the main stars of Sex Education has landed a major role for a BBC comedy show, only three months after the end of the hit Netflix series.

Aimee Lou Wood shot to stardom playing the much-loved Aimee Gibbs - which storyline came to an end when the last and fourth season of the show dropped in September.

The actress, 29, became a fan's favourite playing in the comedy-drama series alongside X-Files sensation Gillian Anderson, Doctor Who's leading star Ncuti Gatwa, and Barbie actress Emma Mackey.

But as her role naturally made its course, Aimee seems to be booked and busy as she already landed a role in a new BBC comedy series.

The Living star joined the cast of the six-part show called Daddy Issues - where she will play a party-loving Gemma, who gets pregnant after joining the mile high club following a random hook-up on her way back from a holiday to Portugal.

As things get hard, Gemma turns to the only person left in her life: her dad Malcolm (played by David Morrissey), who despite of having a kind heart - is kind of useless.

Malcolm is unable to load a washing machine, boil an egg or deal with a technology issue - as he keeps suffering from the collapse of his family and lives in a bedsit for divorced men.

As the father-daughter duo join forces during their unlucky vicissitudes, Malcolm moves in Gemma's flat.

The 'genuinely laugh out loud sitcom' - created from the same team behind White Gold and Inbetweeners - is told to be a 'classic odd couple comedy about two funny, deeply flawed characters, who just happen to be father and daughter', according to the BBC.

It promises to bring on screens from dating disasters to failed romances, from toxic friendships to messy family dynamics, finishing with a 'dangerously sociopathic antenatal teacher'.

Filming has already began, as the actress told about her leading role: 'It had been a very long time since a script had made me laugh out loud. Danielle's did exactly that.

'Then when I heard David was involved, I was even more excited. He's someone I have admired throughout my life.'

'Watching shows like Blackpool and Red Riding when I was younger fuelled my interest in acting and so it feels surreal and amazing to be working with someone I class as a legend and inspiration,' she added.

She played the role of caring, kind and witty Aimee

The Walking Dead star David, 59, who plays Gemma's on screen inept dad, said: 'I'm delighted to be working with Aimee Lou Wood as she's someone I've admired for a while now.

The Long Shadow actor gushed over his co-stars: 'She's a truly unique and gifted talent. Danielle has crafted such a funny and heartfelt piece and I'm so excited to be part of it.'

Danielle Ward, who has written the whole show, said proudly: 'I cannot wait for the world to meet Gemma and Malcolm, and I'm so grateful to the BBC for finally giving me my own series, 20 years after I lost the BBC New Comedy Awards.

'Aimee and David were my dream casting from the get-go and who ever gets their dream cast? It's a total thrill to be working with such naturally funny and wildly talented actors.'
