The coverage of the King's Coronation on BBC1 has topped the list of this year's most watched TV programmes.

An average audience of nearly 12million tuned in on May 6 to see King Charles III being crowned.

The nearly three-hour programme, which started at 10.15am, beat a host of hit shows over the year, according to overnight ratings, which take into account only the viewings on the day of the original broadcast.

The late Queen's funeral had topped the 2022 list.

In second place this year, revealed the website Overnights.tv, was the Eurovision Song Contest final, which was hosted by Liverpool on behalf of war-torn Ukraine. It attracted an audience of 9.8million on BBC1.

Live events were prominent in this year's top ten list, with Glastonbury, the Women's World Cup final and Wimbledon all among the most-watched shows.

Eight of the top ten were aired by the BBC while the other two were on ITV.

The third most watched show was the Blackpool episode of Strictly Come Dancing on November 18, which attracted 8.3million viewers.

But the figures do not include the final of Strictly, which airs tonight and could feature highly on the list.

The stand-out drama hit of the year on broadcast TV was BBC1's Happy Valley, starring Sarah Lancashire as policewoman Catherine Cawood.

The final episode of the drama aired at the start of February, bringing in an average audience of 7.5million.
