Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury's customers have been urged to switch supermarkets - and save HUNDREDS a year. Consumer magazine Which? found that Aldi shoppers paid just £111.66 at the German discount supermarket for a basket of 62 typical food and drink items.

Morrisons shoppers paid £130.05 for the same goods, while Asda shoppers paid £125.26, Tesco shoppers with a Clubcard paid £122.26 on average, or without a Clubcard, £125.09, and Sainsbury’s Nectar card shoppers paid £125.93.

Sainsbury's shoppers without a Nectar card paid £130.79. Harry Rose, Editor of Which? magazine, said: “Our latest monthly analysis once again sees Aldi crowned as the UK’s cheapest supermarket. In the lead up to the festive season, people are looking to cut costs where they can.

"Our analysis shows that by switching supermarkets consumers could save 22%, highlighting the advantages of shopping around where possible." Consumer champion Which? has found that shoppers could have spent £122.92 less by switching from Waitrose to Aldi in October, while those making the swap from Tesco could have an extra£53.72 in their pockets at the end of the month.

Those who thought they might be getting a good deal when they use their Nectar or Clubcard are in for a surprise, as Which? included loyalty prices in its monthly Cheapest Supermarket price comparison, and the results still showed Sainsbury’s to be £14.27 more expensive than Aldi, while Tesco was £10.60 pricier.

In fact, even those with the Lidl Plus app- which offers a discount on everyday Lidl prices – would have saved money by shopping at Aldi in October. Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “Although we’re not surprised to hear we have been the UK’s cheapest supermarket for 12 consecutive months, we’re still enormously proud of this achievement. Our customers know that the only place to get Aldi prices is at Aldi – and the fact that we’re the only UK supermarket to achieve this milestone is proof of that promise.

“Our unswerving commitment to providing the best quality food at the best possible prices clearly shines through when customers see how much money they can save every week simply by switching to Aldi. Here’s to 12 more amazing months!”
