New Year increases for every DWP benefit payment - full breakdown of 2024 rates

DWP payments will be going up from April for the new financial year and here's a comprehensive guide to the new amounts

by · Birmingham Live

Benefits, tax credits and the State Pension are to get a sizeable increase in the new year. The biggest boost will go to the State Pension, which will rise by 8.5 per cent - the second highest rise on record - in line with the substantial growth in average UK weekly earnings during May-July.

Other DWP and HMRC benefits will go up by 6.7 per cent, to match the Consumer Prices Index (a measure of inflation) in the year to September. The increases will all come into effect from April 2024, with protocol dictating that they start from the first full week of the new financial year. That will be Monday, April 8.

By law, several benefits must go up by at least the level of inflation, including Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Severe Disablement Allowance, Industrial Injuries Benefit, Additional State Pension and Guardian's Allowance. Other benefits such as Universal Credit can also be increased "if [the Secretary of State] considers it appropriate, having regard to the national economic situation and any other matters which he considers relevant."

Child Benefit is administered by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and while there is no statutory requirement for it to be increased, the usual practice is to index it in line with inflation. The rates of all HMRC payments, including Child Tax Credit. Working Tax Credit, Child Benefit and Guardian's Allowance, are also included below.

However, the benefit cap - a limit on the maximum amount working-age households can receive in benefits - is to stay the same at £22,020 for couples and single parents outside Greater London (£14,753 for single adults with no children); and £25,323 for couples and single parents in Greater London (£16,967 for single adults with no children).
