An energy giant with five million customers is giving out an automatic £150 discount NOW. Scottish Power is issuing thousands of customers with the Warm Home Discount this winter, it has informed customers who are north of the border.

Scottish Power says: "All you need to get started is your postcode and electricity account number." On its website, the supplier adds: "You can find your electricity account number on any previous electricity bill, email or letter we've sent you."

The Warm Home Discount Scheme is a support programme aimed at helping those who may struggle to pay their energy bills during the winter months. If eligible for the discount, you will receive a one-off payment of £150 towards your energy bill.

In Scotland, the scheme is divided into Core Group 1 and Broader Group. If you or your partner receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you get Savings Credit as well) you could qualify under Core Group 1.

If you don’t qualify this way, you may still be eligible through Broader Group if you or your partner meet certain criteria. Please check the Scottish Power eligibility criteria. If you believe you or your partner match any of these criteria, you’ll need to apply for the payment.

To receive your payment through ScottishPower, you must have been receiving a qualifying benefit and have been a ScottishPower customer on the qualifying date of 13 August 2023. If you believe that yourself or your partner meet the criteria to qualify through a core group but have not received a letter from the Government by January 2024, please contact the Warm Home Discount Scheme Helpline.

The payment will be added as credit to your electricity account. If you have a prepayment meter, you’ll receive a bar coded voucher which you can use to redeem your credit.
