German food giant Aldi has announced its plans to open a new superstore in Litherland.

The famous food retailer has put forward proposals to build on brownfield land at the junction of Pendle Drive and Gorsey Lane. The site is currently occupied by the disused Children's Services Pendle Drive Building, which closed down several years ago.

An Aldi spokesman said the company's nearest store on Park Lane West, Netherton, is of an older, smaller design and is unable to meet growing local demand, which has risen amid the cost-of-living crisis. Shopping in the immediate area is otherwise limited to smaller convenience-type stores, meeting people's day-to-day, short-term needs. A Tesco superstore is located approximately 1.5 miles away on Hawthorne Road.

Bryn Richards, real estate director for Aldi, said: "We're delighted to announce our plans for a new food store at this site in Litherland. The site is ideally located for a store of this size, allowing us to alleviate the pressures on our existing stores in the area and to bring our products to a new area of Sefton, while redeveloping a brownfield site that has fallen into disrepair.

“We’d like to encourage all those in the local area to let us know what they think about our plans and look forward to working with residents and stakeholders to deliver a new Aldi food store for the area.”

Aldi will be displaying its vision for a new food store with a virtual consultation, running from today, July 8, to Monday, July 22. Residents can find details about the plans HERE, and use the online feedback form to have their say.

A submission on the retailer's website added: "A new Aldi food store at this site would enhance the local retail offer for residents in Litherland, alleviating pressures on our existing stores in Sefton and improving access to a discount retailer, through excellent connections to the local highways and bus networks. The new store would also contribute to local economic growth, representing an investment of £7m and create 40 new, full-time equivalent jobs paid at an industry leading rate, as well as generating day-to-day footfall for traders at the small existing shopping parade on Bowland Drive.

"Aldi will be submitting its application to Sefton Council in the coming months. However, as part of our commitment to the community, we first invite you to participate in the consultation process and provide your feedback. "
