Amazon offers students $25 flights home for the holidays: how to get the deal

· New York Post

Amazon and StudentUniverse are offering Prime Student members a primo deal — $25 on select domestic flights to visit their family and friends for the holidays.

The first-of-its-kind promotion kicks off at 9 a.m. EST on Tuesday and continues at 3 a.m. EST on Wednesday and Thursday for travel between mid-December and early January.

Over three days, 3,000 $25 tickets will be available — with 1,000 tickets dropping each day.

After the first 3,000 tickets are claimed, StudentUniverse will give Prime Student members $25 off flight bookings with a promotional code.

Earlier this year, the average cost of a flight leaving New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport was $421.94, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

That one-way fare is nearly a quarter of the estimated $2,000 college students use in spending money per year.

Likewise, an Amazon survey found that nearly 80% of students are saving up for travel.

“As travel costs continue to rise, we’re happy to help make flying more affordable for Prime Students who want to spend this important time with family and friends,” Carmen Nestares, vice president of US Prime and Marketing Tech at Amazon, said in a statement.

“As a mom to a first-year college student, I am excited to have my son home for the holidays.”

The deal arrives as holiday travel is anticipated in massive numbers. US airports hit a major high over Thanksgiving weekend by breaking the Transportation Security Administration’s record for the most travelers in a single day.

Amazon’s deal comes as the costs of flights out of major airports soar.

A recent survey from NerdWallet predicts Dec. 22 and 26 to be among the worst travel days in the US this year.

Experts are warning that the uptick in holiday travel often carries an increased chance of losing luggage. Direct flights are one way to cut down on this risk.
