KUCHING (Sept 19): Government agencies must keep themselves abreast with new and emerging technologies so as to stay ahead of cyber threats, said Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

The Deputy Prime Minister said while the use of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) presents the government with opportunities to enhance public services, there are also challenges.

“The use of AI can provide for a faster and more efficient delivery of social security as well as assistance to the people through government agencies such as the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Social Security Organisation (Socso).

“At the same time, we also need to find new methods in line with the changes in technology and ensure that data is protected from cyber attacks and hackers who are getting more sophisticated,” he told reporters when met after officiating the Social Security Management International Conference (SSMIC) here today.

He added that there are many advantages of AI but when it is used unethically, this can pose a threat to users and the entire system.

Earlier in his speech, Fadillah said it is imperative that policymakers consider how to adapt social security funding and structures that accommodate changes in the workforce and economic environment driven by AI.

“AI offers a remarkable promise and has the potential to streamline our operations, making our services more efficient and responsive.

“From improving the accuracy of benefits distribution to enhancing fraud detection and administrative efficiency, AI can revolutionise how we deliver social security to enhance our quality of life.

“By harnessing these technologies, we aim to provide better support and security for all by ensuring that our social security systems are modern and inclusive,” he said.

He also said that ongoing reform and digital enhancements are essential to ensure that the country’s social security system remains robust, effective and inclusive in every aspect.

“In addressing these concerns, the government has formulated the National Social Security Framework which highlights policy reforms and public awareness with the aim of providing financial security and social protection for our people particularly in the face of economic uncertainties and demographic shifts,” he said.

Organised by Universiti Utara Malaysia’s (UUM) Social Security Management Centre of Excellence, the conference aims to provide a platform for practitioners, academics and the community to discuss current and future social security management strategies and directions.

Also present were UUM vice chancellor Prof Dato Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan and Socso group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed.
