Tesla to cut 14,000 jobs in bid to become 'lean, innovative and hungry'
The electric car manufacturer is slashing more than 10% of its global staff
by Lawrence Matheson, Henry Saker-Clark, PA Deputy Business Editor · The MirrorReports suggest that Tesla is set to lay off more than 10% of its workforce.
The electric car manufacturer, helmed by Elon Musk, is believed to be cutting around 14,000 jobs. In an email first reported by industry publication Electrek, Mr Musk informed employees "we have done a thorough review of the organisation and made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount by more than 10% globally".
"There is nothing I hate more, but it must be done," he added. With over 140,000 employees worldwide it remains unclear where these cuts will occur within the company.
This news follows Tesla's reported decline in vehicle deliveries for the first quarter of 2024, marking its first drop in four years. In his letter, the chief executive said the move will allow Tesla to "be lean, innovative and hungry" for its next growth phase.
"I would like to thank everyone who is departing Tesla for their hard work over the years," added Mr Musk. "I'm deeply grateful for your many contributions to our mission and we wish you well in your future opportunities. It is very difficult to say goodbye."
"For those remaining, I would like to thank you in advance for the difficult job that remains ahead. We are developing some of the most revolutionary technologies in auto, energy and artificial intelligence. As we prepare the company for the next phase of growth, your resolve will make a huge difference in getting us there."
Tesla has so far declined to comment.
