Domestic tourism continued in July to underpin the recovery of tourism activity in Portugal, with year-on-year falls in guest and overnight stays slowing to -64.0 percent and -8.1 percent respectively, INE reported on 15 September.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), in July the tourist accommodation sector (hotels, local accommodation with 10 or more beds and tourism in rural/residential areas) registered 1.0 million guests (-64.0 percent) and 2.6 million overnight stays (-68.1 percent), recovering from the 82.4 percent and 85.5 percent falls recorded in June respectively.

The number of overnight stays by residents fell by 30.8 percent compared to the same month in 2019 (-59.4 percent in June), well below the 84.5 percent drop in the number of overnight stays by non-residents (-96.7 percent in the previous month), says INE.
