Google may be working on a dual-touchscreen Chromebook
by Deirdre O'Donnell · NotebookcheckIf 2020 has done one thing right, it is the dual-screen PC. These devices are here in a major way by now, and can deliver extra productivity, navigation options or even a gaming edge.
Then again, when one thinks of notebooks with an added display, they may think of extremely expensive or elusive machines such as the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo or Lenovo ThinkBook Plus - but decidedly not of Chromebooks. However, there are new signs that Google developers may be working on changing this.
They are based on new code that describes a device - currently known only as Palkia - with not 1 but 2 touchscreens discovered on Google's Chrome OS development hub. This may bring the potential for an answer of sorts to the Surface Duo to mind; however, a trackpad is also unambiguously mentioned in this code, as is a lid-top location.
Therefore, it seems Palkia may turn out more like the ThinkBook Plus than, say, the Zephyrus Duo. Nevertheless, that Lenovo device is an innovative prospect, allowing the user all kinds of options, including the ability to customize the top of the laptop with a "skin" that might even move.
On the other hand, this obviously takes a tablet mode right off the table. However, this new project Palkia may ultimately turn out to be a prototype or proof of concept, meaning the hypothetical dual-screen Chrome OS device may never make it to the market.
