MediaTek commences 6G development in collab with Finland-based Nokia

TrendForce recently conducted a study in which it shows that the 5G smartphone market mainly is dominated by Chinese manufacturers. Amidst the talk of 5G which is yet to fully incorporate into the global market, the buzz around 6G is already here, although it may take the technology another ten years to reach the market.

Leading smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei and Samsung have already dived into 6G technology, and now it is reported that MediaTek too is venturing into the development of 6G technology.

Some sources have reasons to believe that MediaTek is working on 6G technology to get ahead of its own schedule. The company holds a strong footing in the 5G technology and has launched a number of 5G smartphone processors.

MediaTek’s strong presence in the 5G market has obviously come after tireless research in this area for about 6 years. MediaTek has two research centers dedicated to 5G technology, one is their headquarter, and the other one is in Finland.

The research centers also research and test out the latest wireless technologies in collaboration with other European academic institutions, the research and development institute of Finland, and of course Nokia. Local government and research institutions are also keen on this particular technology.

Finland also acts as the hub that carries out important researches on wireless communication technology. MediaTek’s team based in Finland is likely to be an important factor in this 6G research area especially because of its geographical advantage.

The 6G technology is expected to arrive in a commercialized form sometime in 2030, but if MediaTek and Nokia manage to speed up their joint research and subsequently the development, the 6G technology may arrive earlier than expected. It could materialize before the designated time since there is very little conflict of interest between MediaTek, and Finland based mobile company Nokia.
