Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday said lockdown to check the spread of coronavirus is not the solution as people need to get back to work.

Yediyurappa's statement came as about a week-long lockdown in Bengaluru, aimed at controlling the spike in COVID cases, ends on Wednesday. Bengaluru urban and rural areas are currently under "complete lockdown" from 8 pm of July 14 till 5 am on July 22.

In an address to the people of the state through YouTube and Facebook live, Yediyurappa said we have to fight COVID-19 while maintaining a stable economy.

"There'll be no lockdown from tomorrow, people need to get back to work, the economy is also very important. We have to fight COVID19 while maintaining a stable economy. Lockdown is not the solution, now restrictions will be placed only in containment zones," the chief minister said.

Karnataka has reported 67,420 COVID-19 positive cases, which includes 1,403 deaths and 23,795 discharges. Bengaluru Urban district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 33,229 infections.

Yediyurappa blamed people who came from Maharastra and Tamil Nadu for the rise in coronavirus case.

People who came from Maharastra and Tamil Nadu added to the COVID19 cases in Karnataka, he said.

On the state's strategy to fight the pandemic, he said, "Experts have suggested a 5T strategy - Trace, Track, Test, Treat and Technology."
