A man in his 50s has died following a shooting in west Dublin.

It happened at a house in the Croftwood Park area of Ballyfermot at around 11.00am on Monday.

The victim - who had recently returned to Ireland - was shot dead on his doorstep, after responding to a knock at the front door.

Members of his family were in the house at the time of the shooting.

Gardaí are now working to establish a motive for the shooting, and are appealing for help in tracing the movements of the gunman.

They believe the gunman drove a Blue Ford Fiesta to Le Fanu Drive and set fire to the vehicle before walking to Killeen Road and getting into a silver Skoda Octavia.

Superintendent Tony Twomey says the investigation is in the early stages.

He explained: "We're still trying to establish a motivation.

"What we're really looking for today is what members of the public might have seen between 10:30am and 11:30am this morning."

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly anyone who was in the area between 10:30am and  11:30am, to contact Ballyfermot Garda station on 01-666-7200 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111.
