Four teenage boys, aged just 15, who have been linked to a string of robberies in South Manchester were arrested last week after they were spotted by police "acting suspiciously" while behind the wheel of a car.

The vehicle was spotted by Greater Manchester Police officers driving an unmarked car on Merseybank Avenue in Chorlton at around midday, Thursday (February 1), while looking for a vehicle that had been stolen from Didsbury. After a short police chase, all four of the vehicle's teenage occupants got out and tried to escape on foot.

The four boys were chased down Nell Lane, where two were detained, while Police Dog Hully located and cornered two of the other 15-year-old who had attempted to escape down neighbouring roads. The coordinated work between GMP's Tactical Dog Unit and the Vehicle Intercept Unit led to all four boys being arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

Chief Inspector Paul Bray from GMP’s Specialist Operations said: “This is a prime example of our co-ordinated work by specialist resources within GMP where our covert officers in unmarked cars were able to respond quickly to a vehicle acting out of the ordinary involving young people, alongside our Dog Unit and the skills we have available to us to be able to track, trace and detain offenders who are trying to evade capture.

“Deployed across the force area, we are privileged to have such hardworking and dedicated officers, and in this case, also goes for PD Hully who is one of our key members of the Dog Unit with an excellent record.

“This means an investigation could be passed onto district officers to ensure justice can be served at a later date for their actions.

“We will continue our patrols and are determined to keep our communities safe using all the resources available to us which covers a broad range of specialised areas and techniques.”
