Escaped Highlands monkey Honshu is out of isolation... and back with some of his troop after five days on the run.

The Japanese macaque tucked into lunch yesterday with three sub-adult males, who were introduced to his enclosure as part of the process of getting used to being back home.

Honshu made headlines across the country after he escaped the pen at Highlands Wildlife Park near Kincraig in Inverness-shire earlier this month.

The runaway monkey, nicknamed Kingussie Kong, escaped after being spooked by a fight with a rival monkey.

A search operation was launched by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) and the missing macaque was spotted by Stephanie Banyan in her garden in Insch.

Stephanie left a Yorkshire pudding under her bird feeder in the hope of keeping him fed until help arrived.

Keith Gilchrist, Head of Living Collections Operations at Highland Wildlife Park said: “Our expert keepers and veterinarians have been keeping a close eye on Honshu and are pleased with his progress.

“Physically and behaviourally he’s showing no ill effects from his five days on the loose. We’re now in the process of gradually introducing some fellow young, male monkeys to his enclosure, to help resocialise him.”
