A group of six to seven Muslim men verbally abused and thrashed an interfaith couple who were staying at a hotel in Karnataka’s Haveri district, police said.

The incident took place on January 7. The matter came to light after the victims narrated their ordeal to the police, and registered a case against the accused. Police have arrested two accused so far.

On receiving information about an interfaith couple booking a hotel room, the group of men barged into the hotel, opened the door of the couple’s room and assaulted the couple.

The gang of Muslim men verbally abused the couple and filmed the woman while abusing her.

Haveri Superintendent of Police (SP) Anshu Kumar said, “Two arrests have been made and we are further identifying the accused. We will arrest three to four more people soon.”

He said the miscreants were locals and were not affiliated to any organisation.

“Initially it was an assault case and we arrested two people. However, based on the statement of the victims, we are looking to add sections such as kidnapping, outraging the modesty of a woman, assaulting a woman, and attempt to murder," SP Kumar said.
