We simulated Liverpool vs Manchester United to get a Premier League score prediction

Man Utd travel to Anfield this weekend, as they face Liverpool in what's proved a nightmare fixture for Erik ten Hag's side in recent years

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United will be hoping to put an end to their miserable Anfield record of recent years when they face Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

It's been a tough week for United, with Erik ten Hag's side being knocked out of the Champions League just three days after a humiliating 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford. A trip to Anfield is next up for United, and the clash will be a tough one both physically and mentally for Ten Hag's men.

United were battered 7-0 on their trip to Anfield last season, with their last win away to Liverpool coming way back in 2016. Ten Hag's side will also be without Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, but Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford are both available.

We simulated Liverpool vs Manchester United to get a score prediction

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 24 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.

We predict that Liverpool could line up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Endo, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch; Salah, Nunez, Diaz.

We predict that United could set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Lindelof, Shaw; Amrabat, Mainoo, McTominay; Antony, Hojlund, Garnacho.

It was a slow start from United at Anfield, and Ten Hag's side got off to a nightmare start when Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot after Raphael Varane's late challenge on the Egyptian. The opener seemed to knock any belief out of the United side, and in the 29th minute, Liverpool extended their lead.

Picking up possession deep, Trent Alexander-Arnold eased through the United midfield before finding Dominik Szoboszlai, with the Hungarian not short of options around the box. Szoboszlai spotted the run of Darwin Nunez who peeled away from Victor Lindelof, and an emphatic finish saw the striker find the top corner to make it 2-0.

United's best chance of the half came when they caught out the Liverpool high line with a long ball forward, and after bursting through one-on-one, Alejandro Garnacho's effort was smothered by Alisson. Jurgen Klopp's side were in full control at Anfield, and just before the break, Liverpool pulled away into a three-goal lead.

Salah was fed down the right by Alexander-Arnold, and his original cross into the box was met by Andre Onana, but only with an unconvincing punch. The loose ball fell to the feet of Nunez who fired back into the box, and Luis Diaz was on hand to direct an effort into the bottom corner.

After the restart, United put in a much-improved display, with the visitors enjoying plenty of the ball, but struggling to create any clear-cut chances in the final third. Marcus Rashford was introduced off the bench, but the forward failed to make an impact as United fell to another defeat at Anfield.

The transfer window will soon close and although United got their hands on three players well in advance of the September 1 deadline, with Rasmus Hojlund joining Mason Mount and Andre Onana at Old Trafford, activity has stalled since Hojlund's announcement.

A goalkeeper, a midfielder and a striker were Erik ten Hag's priorities heading into the summer window, but injuries early on in the season mean United are in need of further reinforcements.

Our team of experts will be on top of all the goings-on at Old Trafford for the remainder of the window and beyond, and you can get the latest updates and inside information to your phone by joining our new free WhatsApp community below.
