People around Ngāruawāhia are being asked to report any "unusual activity" they might've witnessed after a man's body was found in the area.

The body of 52-year-old John Issac was found in the Waikato River on Thursday.

"Mr Isaac is believed to have been travelling around the Hamilton area where he resides and was last seen wearing black cargo pants and a green pattern camouflage t-shirt," Det Snr Sgt Ross Patterson said on Wednesday.

Patterson said investigators are asking anyone who might've seen or interacted with Isaac in the days prior to January 18 to come forward.

He said the investigation team would also like to hear from anyone who saw any "unusual activity" near the Waikato River between Hamilton and Ngāruawāhia on that day.

Anyone "out on the river or its pathways and banks and may have been recording recreational activities or taken photos or video on their phones" should contact police on 105, quoting file number 240119/8775.

"This is an incredibly distressing time for Mr Isaac's whānau who are being supported by NZ Police and Victim Support," Patterson said.

An increased presence of police officers along the Waikato River could be expected over the next few days, he said.
