More rain forecast for Derbyshire as more than 40 flood warnings and alerts in place

There will be more rain in the north of the county leading to possible further flooding problems

by · Derbyshire Live

Already saturated ground following on from more than nine hours of almost continuous rain looks set to get another soaking from a series of showers forecast today - with the heaviest and most frequent being in the north of the county. This, of course, has implications for river levels as the next lot of rain makes its way down water courses to the south of the county.

More than 40 flood warnings and alerts are still in place for the county and there are still roads closed such as Acorn Way in Oakwood, Markeaton Lane in Derby and the A515 Clifton Road between Doveridge and Ashbourne. Low-lying land is flooded and farm animals have had to be moved to higher ground in many areas.

Water from the River Derwent through Derby has once again flowed onto the footpath adjacent to the Museum of Making and Silk Mill but it is uncertain if it has entered the building. In October, Storm Babet caused thousands of pounds of damage at the museum and it has remained closed since then with plans to reopen at the end of January currently.

Dr Alex Rock, director of commercial and operations, Derby Museums, said: "The river levels were high yesterday, so we put in place our flood procedure. There’s no damage to the building, but the sandbags were out last night, and we’re still OK to reopen."

The good news is that over the next few days, there will be more sunshine although temperatures are likely to be a few degrees cooler than recently with some potential frost overnight.
