'My mum called our baby boy's name stupid – but me and my wife love it'
A man has revealed how his entire family, including his mum, were left fuming after he and his wife decided to give their newborn son a name that didn't stick to family tradition
by Zahna Eklund, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/zahna-eklund/ · Birmingham LiveA new dad has revealed how a furious row erupted in his family after he revealed the name of his baby.
In a post on Reddit, he explained his family always name new babies after their grandparents. After his wife gave birth to a baby boy a couple of months ago, the couple should have named him either Jack or Parker. However, they decided to ditch the family tradition and named him Hollis instead.
His wife's side of the family doesn't have any naming traditions, so he didn't feel comfortable forcing his own family's tradition. What's more, neither of them were fond of Jack or Parker as a name.
AITA for telling my mom to shut up and accept that my wife and I aren't naming our kids the way she and dad named me and my siblings?

The man faced the wrath of his relatives as a result, particularly his mother - who had a scathing three-word response to the child's name. His mum dubbed it the "worst name imaginable" and argued that adhering to tradition could have prevented "stupidly named kids".
Detailing the incident online, the father said: "She told me we had no business breaking a long-held tradition in our family and there's a reason those traditions are there so foolish people can't name their babies the worst names imaginable. She also said my in-laws must be so smug thinking they'll have at least two 'stupidly named grandkids'."
His loss of composure escalated the issue when he demanded his mother "shut up", which led to her becoming incensed by what she deemed his "rudeness". Nevertheless, online commentators supported the father, asserting that his mother should not influence the choice of name.
One individual remarked: "If your mother wants to have a say in naming a baby, then she should have another baby. She was unnecessarily rude and disrespectful to you, your wife, your in-laws, and your child."
Another chimed in: "It's as simple as this: if the kid isn't theirs, they don't get to decide the name. If they have a naming tradition, it doesn't matter. It's still not their kid, so it's not their decision."
