The crash scene on the M6

M6 lorry driver taken to hospital as busy stretch to remain closed 'for some time'

The crash happened between J14 (near Penkridge) and J13 (Stafford)

A lorry driver was taken to hospital with 'potentially serious' injuries after a crash on the M6. A stretch of the southbound carriageway has been closed following the smash, leaving motorists trapped for several hours.

Emergency services were called to the scene - between J14 (near Penkridge) and J13 (Stafford) - just after 9am on Tuesday, March 12. Two HGVs were involved in the collision, with firefighters having to free one driver, who was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital for treatment. The second driver was not injured.

All traffic caught within the closure has now been released, however the road is expected to remain closed for "some time" due to a ruptured lorry fuel tank spilling a "significant amount" of diesel across all lanes. National Highways said the carriageway required resurfacing.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.11am to a road traffic collision involving two lorries on the M6 between junctions 14 and 13 in Stafford. Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a critical care car from Midland Air Ambulance attended the scene.

"Upon arrival we found a man who was the driver of one of the lorries. He was extricated from the vehicle by the fire service. Once extricated, he was assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained potentially serious injuries.

"He received treatment at the scene and was conveyed to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment. The second driver did not require assessment.”

There were still severe delays on the approach to J14 this afternoon. Surrounding routes through Stafford are also congested as traffic seeks an alternative. See our live blog for the latest updates.
