A man, who ran into a neighbour's house after he heard screaming, said "it was like something out of a horror movie".

Mark Charnock, 39, heard screaming from a nearby property while on the phone outside his home on Eleanor Street, Wigan at 12.30pm on December 2. He ran towards the sound and went inside.

Mr Charnock told the Manchester Evening News that he found "blood everywhere" and a man with "a very faint pulse". He said he started performing CPR following the instructions of the emergency services over the phone. He added: "It felt like an eternity" as he tried to save the man's life.

When Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers arrived at the scene they found the man, 37, had died. A 28-year-old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning today.

An air ambulance landed at the scene shortly after the incident. Specialist forensic crime scene investigators were seen working at the scene in the hours that followed.

Mr Charnock said: "It's not something that would happen on this street, I've lived here for about nine years. It was like something out of a horror movie. It’s been a really sad couple of days. I’m in a situation where I’ve tried to save someone’s life and not succeeded - but you have to do what you can."

He added: "I'm a DJ and it was only a few weeks ago that I organised a Halloween street party for all the families here. We got all the permissions and we closed off the road and it was a really nice time - this just isn't the kind of thing that happens here.

"I’m in a situation where I’ve tried to save someone’s life and not succeeded - but you have to do what you can. I'd do it for anyone, it was just human instinct."

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Davis from GMP's Major Incident Team said: "This investigation is in it's very early stages and we are still piecing together the circumstances surrounding this man's death. I would like to thank the brave members of the public who were alerted to the incident and carried out CPR prior to the arrival of emergency services.

"I understand the concerns this incident will cause in the local community but I can assure you our investigation is progressing at pace. A 28-year-old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at this time for questioning. We also believe this to be an isolated incident with no risk to the wider public."
