The family of 56-year-old Abdulganiyu Baba-Imole, who was arrested last Friday, has called for his release.
Baba-Imole had allegedly attacked Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq over the latter’s plan to construct a flyover at the Tanke area of the metropolis.

He was picked up by plain-clothed police officers as he returned from Ilorin Central Mosque after observing Jumat prayer.

Some fellow worshippers who witnessed the scene said the security men accosted him and led him into a waiting car.
A police source said a letter from the ministry of communication sent to the Police Headquarters indicted Baba-Imole.

According to investigations, he was detained at ‘A’ Division police station before he was transferred to the headquarters.

Spokesperson for the state police command,  Ejire-Adeyemi Adetoun, confirmed the arrest, saying: “Yes, it is true but investigation is ongoing.”

Meanwhile, two persons from the troubled family, who visited The Guardian office in Ilorin, urged the public to intervene, maintaining that their breadwinner is not a politician.

They wondered how “the police could arrest him on Friday, knowing there would be holidays on Monday and Tuesday”, and added: “This is a great injustice and humiliation.”

The family alleged that the police were coercing Baba-Imole to say the spokesperson of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was his sponsor before he could be released.

When contacted, the state chapter of the PDP, through its publicity secretary, urged the police not to get caught in the web of Kwara politics.
