Tottenham could be set to unleash the Timo Werner Chelsea didn't see thanks to Ange Postecoglou
Ange Postecoglou could bring out the best in Timo Werner at Tottenham following the attacker's loan move from German side RB Leipzig
by Rob Guest · football.londonTimo Werner will be intent on ensuring that he is in the headlines for all the right reasons following his return to the Premier League with Tottenham. Having rejoined RB Leipzig in the summer of 2022 following two years with Chelsea, the German club gave him the green light at the beginning of the week to link up with Spurs on a loan deal until the end of the season.
If it does prove to be a successful loan spell for the player in N17, Ange Postecoglou's side have the option to make the move permanent for £15.5million. Once talk of a January switch to Tottenham was first mooted last weekend, a number of Spurs fans raised their eyebrows going on the player's frustrating time with London rivals Chelsea.
Although the 27-year-old did leave Stamford Bridge with a Champions League winners' medal in his collection after beating Man City in the showpiece finale in 2021, many viewed his two seasons in SW6 as a failure due to his struggles in front of goal following his £45million move from Leipzig. Werner did in fact hit double figures in his two years with Chelsea after contributing 12 in 2020/21 and 11 the following campaign, yet those numbers could have been significantly higher if it wasn't for some high-profile misses.
Werner, who was still valued highly by his Chelsea teammates for what he contributed on the pitch, was often mocked for his failure to convert chances for the Blues, with one particular compilation of his misses from the 2020/21 season viewed on YouTube over 1.2million times. That is why some Tottenham supporters have questioned the decision to sign the player on loan at a time when Postecoglou's team are looking to hit the next level.
Regardless of what did or did not happen for Werner across the capital in west London, his loan move to Tottenham presents him with a fresh opportunity to make his mark in England. Just because he struggled at Chelsea doesn't necessarily mean that will be the case for him at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Having had plenty of time to reflect on his two years in the Premier League, Werner may now be better for having that experience in England and Tottenham could potentially see the best of him going forward. The chance for the attacker to work under Postecoglou for the remainder of the season is one that should fill all Spurs supporters with hope, especially as the Australian has a great record of improving players and extracting the best out of them.

Speaking to SPURSPLAY following his loan move from RB Leipzig, Werner opened up on his conversations with Postecoglou and the "feeling" he got from the head coach.
"First of all very happy to be here. I think I've joined a very, very big club. I talked with the manager and it was a really, really good talk," Werner said in his first club interview. "He gave me straight away the feeling of what I need to join a club, what I want to feel when you talk to a manager.
"Also the tactics and the style, how he wants to play, how he lets the team play, for me I thought straight away that it fits perfectly."
Having the attributes to be a big hit in Postecoglou's team as he has the pace and energy to press as well as the ability to score and assist, Werner could be a very shrewd acquisition by the football club. Postecoglou seems to have made quite the impact on the player already and he could bring out even more in him over the coming weeks due to his motivational skills.
Not a head coach who is going to sit down and spend time with his players or engage in small talk, what the 58-year-old says on the training ground, in team meetings and on a matchday is an incredible weapon in his locker. Speaking back in October, James Maddison discussed Postecoglou's impact and the power of his talks.
“He’s a really good motivational speaker," said the England international. "He has this way about him, when he talks to a group of players, he’s almost like an alpha male. When he’s talking, everyone’s listening. You can’t even blink.
“The team talks he does normally the day before the game, or even the day of the game in the changing room, they get you going, they get you ready to go out and play.
“He’s demanding of you. He uses real-life stuff to compare to football. He relates it back to life and family. It makes you want to play, work and run for him. He’s got a natural talent."
On the back of his two years at Chelsea and his lack of game time at RB Leipzig this season, the introduction of Postecoglou to Werner's career could have come at the perfect time for the player, especially as he looks to rediscover his top form in order to earn a place in Julian Nagelsmann's Germany squad for Euro 2024. If that is to be the case, it will be Postecoglou and Tottenham who see the very best of Werner between now and May.
Appearing to be a good signing for Tottenham as they look to secure a Champions League spot for next season, Werner could turn out to be a great signing thanks to Postecoglou.
