Arsenal legend tells Mikel Arteta two players that could cost him Premier League title
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been warned by Gunners legend Paul Merson that his current striking options of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah may not be enough to win the title
by Josh O'Brien · The MirrorPaul Merson has claimed that Arsenal's strike-force could be what costs them the title this term, with the Gunners preparing for battle with Liverpool and Manchester City.
It is the Reds who currently top the table on 48 points, having lost just once this term. Pep Guardiola's City sit second on 43, the same tally as third-placed Arsenal, but having played one game less than both Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp's men.
League-leaders Liverpool have shown no signs of slowing down, even without talisman Mohamed Salah who has been away on international duty with Egypt. Arsenal were favourites in the eyes of many before a ball had been kicked this term, but a mid-season rut has seen their title credentials called into question.
Though Merson does not believe that his old side can be counted out just yet, he has expressed concerns over Arsenal's attack and whether striking duo Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah have enough goals in them to fire the Gunners to a fourth Premier League title.
"I think Arsenal are still in the title race," Merson told Sky Sports. "They had a big result the other day and they’re still there and thereabouts, so you have to put them in the equation.
"But Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah won’t score as many goals between them as Salah – and he is on the right wing. That’s a massive advantage for Liverpool, who will be in the race for a long time if they keep playing as they are."
However, Merson did go on to explain that Klopp could see his side's title charge derail in a matter of weeks if upcoming results go against them. Liverpool welcome Chelsea to Anfield in their next league tie, before making the trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal.

He did stop short of tipping Liverpool as favourites however, insisting that reigning champions City remain the team to beat this term. Merson added: "I won’t say Liverpool are title favourites though.
"City can just churn, churn and churn out wins. They can go 10 games without losing, easily. Look at them now, they’ve won eight out of their last nine matches [in all competitions]."
Liverpool's trip to north London on February 4 to take on Arsenal could be a defining fixture in this season's title race. City will be watching safe in the knowledge that at least one of their title rivals will be dropping points.
