by Harry Rutter · The MirrorStephen Webb broke down in tears on Monday's Celebs Go Dating after a nightmare date.
The former Gogglebox star is trying his luck at love in the new series on E4, alongside famous faces including Ella Morgan, Helen Flanagan, Chris Taylor, Jamelia, Tristan Phipps and Lauryn Goodman. Last week's episode saw him go on two nightmare date nights.
His car crash meet-ups didn't go down well with viewers on Friday who branded the ordeal "embarrassing". Stephen had to face the fury in Monday's instalment as he was reunited with his potential matches, receiving a brutal set of feedback from the pair.
The 53-year-old met up with 22-year-old Ben who admitted he was left feeling uncomfortable by his crude jokes. His dinner with a driving instructor didn't go down well either after asking him if he'd ever "shagged" in the back of his learner vehicle.
Stephen was tackled by the love-finding coaches as he was told his inappropriate antics "weren't funny" and that he needed to change his ways. After hearing the lads didn't enjoy their dates, the reality TV star broke down in tears, saying he felt like an "old pervert".
Viewers flocked to X, formally Twitter, with their feedback. One wrote: "How does Stephen cry when it is clear that you are rude if saying yor date is 'boring' #CelebsGoDating." While someone else said: "I come across as a pervert!!! Well Stephen everyone watching said the exact same #CelebsGoDating." Another added: "#CelebsGoDating @celebsgodating No, you come across as an old drunk pervert."
Another penned: "I liked Stephen on Gogglebox but this has done him no favours! he is awful omg." While someone else said: "Well at least I can take solace in the fact that there are worse daters out there. #CelebsGoDating." On the flip side, jumping to Stephen's defence, one fan wrote: "I do feel a bit sorry for Stephen. Still think it’s too soon for him to be on this show. #CelebsGoDating." A second concluded: "I know he was abit crude. But they well got into Steven then #CelebsGoDating."
Stephen's date that sparked a bit of a stir, with some branding it "embarrassing" due to the cringe-worthy moments. The date didn't start smoothly as Ben confessed he was under the weather, saying, "I had a bit of bad food last night," to which Stephen wittily responded: "Oh, this is going to be a fun date."
In a candid moment, Stephen admitted in a confessional: "I am feeling really nervous, Ben has got the runs let's see how this goes." During their encounter, Stephen, who works as a hairdresser, couldn't resist critiquing Ben's hairstyle, even suggesting he had a perm, which Ben refuted. Stephen cheekily remarked to his date: "I could do better than that."
Ultimately, Ben declined a second date with Stephen, who conceded that he hadn't anticipated the age difference being an issue but acknowledged that learning Ben's mum was younger than him was the "turning point" Reflecting on the experience, he said: "I should have known better but I went with my gut on the night."
Social media was abuzz with reactions to Stephen's appearance on Celebs Go Dating, with one viewer commenting: "I like Stephen from gogglebox but was a tad uncomfy watching him go for younger men." Another chimed in: "Nah Stephen that's embarrassing."
A third person weighed in: "People saying age is just a number. Ye that's good for you BUT not all of us want to be sleeping with a man 20+ years younger #CelebsGoDating." While a different user responded: "Stephen needs to act his age." However, there was support for Stephen as well, with a comment on the website reading: "Kudos to @E4Tweets for showing age isn't anything but a number."
