12 Man United players discover their fate is guaranteed to be decided under Erik ten Hag

Manchester United have several players entering the final year of their contract, which will be overseen by Erik ten Hag after the manager agreed a contract extension

Manchester United opting to keep Erik ten Hag means that many of the squad are now set to have their futures decided during the manager’s tenure.

The hierarchy at United has changed under the Ineos Group, with the club bringing in the likes of Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox to revamp their recruitment strategy. It is an attempt to shift control over transfers away from the manager and adopt a more detailed approach.

However, Ten Hag extending his contract until 2026 means his decisions will influence whether the 12 United players entering the final year of their contracts will be offered new deals or sold. It is a long list, but some players’ futures are simpler to predict than others.

Amad, 21, who has an option for a further year, returned from injury and showed moments of quality, priming himself a breakthrough season. Willy Kambwala, 19, also proved to be dependable during United’s defensive crisis and has plenty of potential. It could certainly be argued both young players deserve new contracts.

On the other end of the scale is Donny van de Beek, who has failed to revive his United career under his former Ajax boss and spent part of last season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt. The club are looking to move on the 27-year-old with Girona in transfer talks, and he is not the only returning loanee that United could cash in on.

Hannibal, 21, and Facundo Pellistri, 22, also spent time away from Old Trafford, with Sevilla and Granada respectively. Both United academy graduates have reached the stage where they need regular football, and that seems an unlikely prospect as part of Ten Hag’s side.

One of the more intriguing dilemmas is Scott McTominay, who has an option to extend his contract until 2026. The Scotland midfielder, 27, was expected to leave the club last year but fought his way back into contention to score a cluster of clutch goals for United. He will have significantly boosted his transfer value but could defy the odds once again to stay at the club beyond his current deal. Fulham have been linked with a summer deal.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is among a collection of players regularly used by Ten Hag but are not one of the first names on the team sheet. The 26-year-old is trusted by the manager, making 30 appearances last season, but feels unlikely to agree a new deal, with West Ham among the clubs to have shown an interest in the former Crystal Palace star.

Victor Lindelof, 29, is another defender entering his final season at Old Trafford, if he does not leave this summer. The Sweden international was used at left-back on occasion last term, racking up 28 appearances, but is expected to fall further down the pecking order as United target new centre-backs.

On that topic, Harry Maguire also has an option to stay at United until 2026 and proved his worth with a string of commanding displays during the never-ending cycle of centre-back injuries. However, the 31-year-old could move on before then, with the club already eyeing the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Jarrad Branthwaite to take his place, unless the former United captain is happy with a backup role.

Christian Eriksen faces a simpler decision as he struggled for game time in a midfield that is likely to be bolstered this summer. The 32-year-old should be enjoying the latter years of his career as a first-team regular at another club. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton signed a new contract last week but will be 39 years old in 2025 and may choose to hang up his gloves.

Meanwhile, Mason Greenwood was loaned to Getafe last season after United scrapped their plans to reintegrate him into the squad. The 22-year-old registered 16 goal contributions in Spain and looks set to depart United this summer, having entered the final year of his contract, with Marseille and Lazio having tabled bids for the forward. He held talks with United chiefs on Monday morning and did not train at Carrington.

Aside from the 12 players in the last years of their deals whose situations are guaranteed to be addressed before Ten Hag's new deal runs out, Jadon Sancho’s future will also be resolved this summer. The winger fell out with the United boss last season, prompting his loan move to Borussia Dortmund, and Ten Hag signing a contract extension is further proof that Sancho will be heading for the exit door.

Casemiro is another player who could move on during Ten Hag’s reign, given the dip in form that he suffered last term. The 32-year-old signed a contract until 2026, with an option for a further year, but it feels unlikely the Brazilian midfielder will be part of United’s squad for the next two years.
