A teenager from Ashton is taising so he can go on a trip to Kenya to help struggling communities over there.

Louie Sowler, 13, was offered the opportunity to visit the African country on a four-week expedition in 2025 and will be helping build houses, grow crops and care for the wildlife.

He wanted to participate in the programme after finding out about it from his schooo, Great Academy in Ashton.

It's not the first time that Louie has wanted to help others, and he has been getting involved with his local community to help gather donations to reach his fundraising goal by 2025.

He has taken on tasks such as delivering over 1000 leaflets on Boxing Day in exchange for a donation for his fundraiser as well as selling shutter shades and cones at his Christmas school disco.

He even worked through the Christmas break - having helped over 12 holiday-themed fairs. Mum Kaye said: “We have been overwhelmed. The amount of positive words, kindness, offers of jobs to help his fundraising, generous people supporting him in any way they can has been unbelievable.”

Louie has also been helping local residents with tasks around their home to help raise the money for his trip and is fully booked on assistance until at least the end of February.

Kaye said: “He’s now busy doing gardening, tabletop sales and other jobs for local residents until at least the end of February and beyond! We are so grateful to everyone and Louie is determined to do them all proud.”

The Great Academy Ashton pupil has currently raised over £1400 and is on track to reach his goal of just under £6000 to help fund his journey.

A member of the Denton community said: “I saw the work he was going on Facebook and was thinking what a brilliant young man. For someone as young as that to give up his holidays all of a trip to help others is inspiring, I will be donating to help.”
