Householders in Ayr were today beginning the clean-up operation- after reports of flash flooding left some homes under six inches of rainwater.

Several homes and roads in and around the town fell victim to the incessant rain yesterday, which brought about rising levels of rainwater.

The reports prompted one South Ayrshire Councillor to issue an alert on Sunday as the situation became more serious.

Hillfoot Road, Ayr, and Cunningham Crescent were badly affected after hours of rainfall blocked drains and left some local roads submerged.

Ayr East Councillor Chris Cullen, said this on social media on Sunday: “While the majority of the flash flooding has dissipated, there are still some large puddles at the lower areas of the ward and this is slowly clearing.

“The water levels are returning to normal but the rain will continue. Be careful if out walking or driving tonight and be prepared for tomorrow morning incase there is a resurgence.”

He added: “Ayrshire Roads Alliance have been out, you may still see them assessing the area.”

One resident in Hillfoot Road said: “Complete nightmare! Drains outside my house on Hillfoot Road blocked again and water flooded the front garden above doorstep.

“I was out with a pole trying to clear the drain completely- soaked with cars continuously driving too fast completely covering me in more water while trying to save my house from disaster.

"Family trying to get help from South Ayrshire Council who are still not here, over an hour later. Total joke!”

Forehill, Holmston and Masonhill Community Council shared pictures on social media of the conditions in Cunningham Crescent, saying: “There is local flooding due to heavy rainfall.

“Cunningham Crescent is currently under six inches of water. Please take care around the area.”

Another resident said: “Water pouring out of drains down Ellisland Square onto Mount Oliphant, flooding roads and gardens...take care.”

And in another post one women added: “I need a boat for tomorrow’s school run.”

Holmston Road, Holmston Drive, Caledonia Road, Castlehill Road and the corner of Cessnock Place were also said to be affected.

Scottish Water has been contacted for a response.
