The celebrated singer revealed to fans the harrowing news on Monday, disclosing that her beloved mother Patricia and sister Alison had both died on the same weekend day.
A heartbroken Mariah, aged 55, shared in a statement to People: "My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend."
Mourning the loss, she also revealed the death of her sibling, saying: "Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
Reflecting on her recent family time, the worldwide star expressed a deep gratitude: "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mum before she passed."
In the midst of her grief, Carey extended gratitude for the compassion shown by others and asked for privacy: "I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.", reports the Manchester Evening News.
The circumstances surrounding Patricia and Alison's deaths have not been disclosed, as well as the causes. Patricia, a distinguished vocalist and vocal coach, and her ex-husband Alfred Roy Carey were the parents of Alison, Mariah, and Morgan.
After splitting from Alfred Roy Carey in 1973, Patricia maintained her music career before deciding to have a family, while Alison faced numerous difficulties, such as homelessness, and has long been distant from her sister Mariah, an international superstar.
Mariah Carey has openly discussed the tumultuous relationship with her mother, acknowledging her contribution to her singing abilities. In her memoir, 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey', she explores their intricate dynamics, saying: "Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities."
"It's never been only black-and-white - it's been a whole rainbow of emotions. Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's."
Despite their rocky past, Mariah continues to nurture her connection with her mother. They shared a touching moment during ABC's Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special in 2010, singing 'O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus' in a duet.
In her autobiographical work, Mariah expresses her complex feelings towards her mum by writing, "And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always."
Mariah Carey has candidly discussed the difficult decision to distance herself from her siblings, Alison and Morgan, for her own health. In her memoir, she expressed that it was "emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact".
The celebrated singer, often dubbed the 'Queen of Christmas' due to her festive anthem, is a mother to twins Moroccan and Monroe with former spouse Nick Cannon. She has previously opened up about the "dysfunction" she experienced during Christmas time as a child.
Reflecting on past holiday seasons in 2021, Mariah shared her mixed emotions towards the festive period.
Despite her song 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' being an enduring holiday favourite for three decades, Mariah's personal Christmas memories are bittersweet. At the age of 55, she spoke openly about the struggles of her youth.
In a moment of reflection from 2021, Mariah revealed: "I always wanted Christmas to be perfect and I always looked forward to the holidays, but I had this incredibly dysfunctional family that would ruin it every year."
She recalled childhood Christmases marked by disappointment, such as receiving only modest presents like wrapped fruit, which inspired a promise to herself: "I was like, 'When I grow up, I am never going to let that happen. I am going to make Christmas perfect every year'."
