Coming into the hard-court tournament at Melbourne Park on the back of winning the ASB Classic, Gauff did not give Schmiedlova any breathing space whatsoever. Gauff seized the initiative right from the word go by taking a 3-1 lead with 2 breaks of serve.
Although Schmiedlova earned three breaks back to stay alive, Gauff was equal to the task as she closed out the set with four service breaks. The second set was a one-way traffic in favour of the American teenager.
The 19-year-old Gauff will next be up against Caroline Dolehide, who beat qualifier Leolia Jeanjean 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round.

In the men’s singles, Ben Shelton made his way through to the second round after beating Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 7-6, 7-5. He took 2 hours and 46 minutes to come up trumps.
Shelton was excellent with his first serves, winning 79 percent of points from them. Shelton also pulled off 14 aces to put pressure on Agut. The fact that he churned 53 winners helped him big time.
Shelton is next scheduled to face Australia’s Christopher O'Connell, who moved to the second round after beating Christopher O'Connell 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 1-6, 5-7.
Daniil Medvedev had his fair share of luck after qualifier Terence Atmane, who was making his Grand Slam debut, retired midway due to injury.
Medvedev was leading 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 1-0 when he got the walkover after Atmane could not continue further. He will next face Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori, who beat qualifier Patrick Kypson in the first round.
