At 3.6°C, Delhi records season's coldest morning as capital shivers in cold wave

Delhi on Saturday shivered at 3.6 degrees Celsius, the lowest minimum temperature recorded this winter season.

Delhi on Saturday recorded its coldest morning this winter season, with the minimum temperature dropping to 3.6 degrees Celsius as a blanket of dense fog affected train operations. The mercury dipped even lower in the Lodhi Road area to 3.4 degrees Celsius.

Most parts of north India continued to reel under severe cold wave conditions.

Due to the prevailing cold wave conditions, a red alert has been issued for Delhi, Punjab and Haryana for Saturday and an orange alert in the region for tomorrow (Sunday). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that dense fog and prevailing cold wave conditions are unlikely to abate in parts of northwest India during the next 3-4 days, till January 16.

"Dense to very dense fog at many places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh and dense fog at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan. Moderate fog in isolated pockets over Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh. Cold day to severe cold day conditions at many places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh," the weather department said.

"A blanket of dense fog engulfed most parts of Northern India, disrupting rail and air traffic in the entire region. Dense to very dense fog will continue in parts of northwest India during the next 3 days," it added.

Cold wave conditions continue in Delhi. A thin layer of fog engulfs the national capital (Visuals from Pragati Maidan area, shot at 6.30 am). The visibility in the national capital was recorded at 50 meters.

Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are very likely to continue in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi today, the weather department has said.

The national capital is likely to witness partly cloudy sky with dense fog in the morning. The minimum temperature is expected to remain below 5 degrees Celsius for the second consecutive day, it added.
