Teenager drowns in Grand Canal after getting into difficulty while swimming

Emergency services were called to the scene near Celbridge on Saturday after being alerted that a person had gotten into difficulty while swimming.

A teenage boy has died following a drowning incident in the Grand Canal in Kildare over the weekend.

Emergency services were called to the scene just outside Celbridge at around 5.40pm on Saturday, after being alerted that a person had gotten into difficulty while swimming. Sadly, the boy's body was recovered from the water a short time later.

Gardai believe the incident was a tragic accident and no foul play is suspected, Dublin Live reports. Arrangements are being made for a post-mortem examination.

A Garda spokesman said: "At approximately 5:40pm on Saturday 11th May 2024, Gardaí became aware of a person who had gotten into difficulty in the water in the Grand Canal in between Ardclough and Celbridge in County Kildare. A number of emergency services attended the scene and the body of a male youth in his teens was recovered from the water a short time later.

"The local coroner has been notified, and arrangements are being made for a post-mortem examination."
