A group of men fishing on Tynemouth Pier in the early hours of the morning had to be rescued after conditions turned treacherous.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was called at around 1.30am on Saturday, December 23, and tasked with bringing the three men to safety as breaking waves crashed over the North Pier.

One of the fishermen had called his dad worried about the group making their way back to land due to the stormy conditions.

The father called 999 and spoke with the coastguard who sent the eight life brigade volunteers to the scene along with Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team and Tynemouth RNLI.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade confirmed that everyone was brought to safety using the pier tunnel and emergency services left the scene at 3.10am. The brigade, which has attended 125 incidents so far in 2023, has now issued a warning about the dangers of accessing the pier.

A brigade spokesman said: "While we’re grateful the call was made to the coastguard and we were able to ensure everyone got to go home, it's important to reiterate that the pier is private property. It has clear signage and barriers indicating that entry is forbidden.

"It is in a particularly dangerous condition at the seaward end following the storm damage it received in October.

"While we can still respond to calls such as this, the risk to the team is greater than it was and this also increases the chances of someone being washed off if they do decide to enter the pier to fish. We would encourage, in the strongest way possible, anyone intending to fish off the pier not to do this."
