Parts of Northumberland and County Durham have been issued with a yellow weather warning for snow and ice by the Met Office.

A northerly airflow will bring cold Arctic air to the UK from today and into early next week, with snow showers primarily focused across northern areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Met Office has now put a warning in place for the whole of Tuesday, January 16. for Northumberland and County Durham.

In towns such as Alnwick and Wooler, temperatures are forecast to hit -3°C, though that could be even colder on higher ground. The warning suggests there could be delays on the roads, power cuts, delays or cancellations to rail and air travel, a chance of injuries from slips and falls, and that some rural communities may be cut off.

The Met Office said of Tuesday's weather: "Very cold throughout. Chance of some disruptive snow on Tuesday, clearing overnight with a risk of ice."

Residents in five postcodes across Northumberland and County Durham, are set to receive cold weather payments in the coming weeks as a response to the sub-zero temperatures. These are Burnhope (DH8), Elsdon (NE19), Allendale (NE47), Bellingham (NE48), and Haltwhistle (NE49).

The £25 state help is paid to people across England and Wales who receive certain benefits and the scheme runs between November 1 and March 31.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) sent out a cold warning on Thursday, January 11 which will remain in place until Thursday, January 18, also warning of "potentially disruptive snow to low levels".
